    Hi and thanks for sharing, appreciated. Lots of things happen when splitting wood. And when someone splitting is skilled and in the zone, the hand is quicker than the eye and to the inexperienced it can look more dangerous than it is. A skilled kindling axe user, when warmed up and in their grove can be very focused and aware of exactly what will work best for each bit of wood as it presents itself and acting accordingly. In the last couple of months I've split 70 kindling bags, didn't hit a finger once. Years ago I occasionally glanced a finger but I never got cut. Back then I set up with a waist high splitting block, wore gloves and tried to never allow a situation where the axe can meet a finger backed by a solid surface. So I aim to never put a finger or thumb on top of a piece to be split, but to hold gently on the side as a core method, but lots and lots of other knowledgeable skills and techniques are useful for varying wood and situations. Today I have a wood splitting bench with a semi circle end into which a splitting block fits. Kindling usually splits onto the bench top so bending is mostly eliminated. I've found it worth while to have a high splitting block for doing kindling. I used to position a wheelbarrow to catch most splits. This worked well for moving them to where they were to be stored or for then putting into bags. With my current set up it's often from complete round to bagged kindling at the wood splitting bench. When I have learned some more I would like to move to processing kindling mechanically. Thanks again for sharing Cheers sincerely d

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult 9 дней назад

      That has been on my to do list for years lol. I think the way to go is black ABS. You could put it in the sun to heat up. It would take a lot of oil, but I think you could probably get away with using some cheap veg oils like canola and corn oil. They are fairly far onto the drying side of the scale. I'm not sure how much better ABS would be for resisting UV light, but it is probably best to paint it whatever is used.

    I have a franken tree I top worked 2 Bradford pears. I have 6 or more pears and apples mixed. these are planted near a leach field. main issue i have is growth. this is not an exaggerated measurement my graphs now will be 3years old this fall. but the growth is at a rate of over 6' a year. I have trimmed tree now twice. I am close now to 4 feet growth since last trim first of march. I am only getting fruit from the apples. I know the apples on a pear tree graft resist some and those that take do rake longer to adapt. Is there any hope at this rate of growth in ever getting pears? I seem to have a perfect place to save future graft stock but would like to eat a pear sometimes off my tree. I do not see any way to slow this growth unless cut the tree trunk. I am now having to cut limbs because bending and some breaking. any suggestions or thoughts?

I read you store them in a paper bag with some sawdust. Do you have any other suggestions. Thank you very much!

    • @SkillCult

      I think that will work. Or in a box of sawdust would be fine. The best place to store them is in the ground, but not digging them up every year. I think your plan will work. Just if they are not in a very hot or very humid environment. Just a cool dry place in the dark and replant with the first fall rains.

    • @SkillCult

    Good video, thanks for sharing. Boxers chopping down trees and splitting wood didn't start with Muhammad Ali in the '60s. Bare-knuckle boxers in the late-1800s chopped wood as part of their conditioning, and it continued into the 1900s. Video of Jack Johnson chopping wood circa 1910, Jack Dempsey in the 1920s, Joe Louis in the 1930s and into the '40s, Patterson in the '50s. Some fighters still simulate that training nowadays by using sledgehammers on huge tires. In the 1990s, George Foreman kept that old school way going by chopping wood in training camp.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult 27 дней назад

      If there is no serious constriction of the graft union, there is no reason to unwrap. Some wrappings can even be left on and will fall apart by pressure of the sun. If it is starting to restrict, unwrap and rewrap if it seems too early. Most are healed enough by july sometime.

      I don't think you'll have much luck going backward like that. Matt Richards has been talking lately about steering hides in the early tanning toward more stiff or more soft. I think you'd have to take his class though. His Instagram is traditonal tanners. One thing to try ion a very small scrap is thorough tanning in strong tannic acid solution. but that will not usually turn a deer hide into sheath material, it will just firm it up a little.
